Hitting Practice - Hitting practice is now back and open for registration. Entry limited to 16 people so sign up quick to avoid missing out.

Club Night - Club Night is now open for registration also. We had a great sign-up last week, but the weather unfortunately prevented a great night’s tennis. Hopefully, this week will be a lot better.

Tommy Jackson - Crosshaven will host the Tommy Jackson this year on the 12th of October commencing at 11 O’clock. A lot of pressure on Carrigaline as we have not won it in a couple of years after been extremely unlucky last year when it went down to super doubles in the last two matches of the day. We are looking for people to enter either individually or as a pairing. This is a WD and MD event so please email your interest to captain@carrigalinetennisclub.com and deadline to submit your interest is Friday the 4th at 8 O’clock .

Round Robins - The Round Robins will commence again this week. If any members want to withdraw or to be added to it please email social@carrigalinetennisclub.com before Tuesday at 8 O’clock as we will have the league back up and running on Friday the 4th of October.

Captains Update - 22nd September 2024

Hitting Practice  - Hitting Practice is now back and open for registration. Mark Cunningham and Alan Kelly will be on hand to put you through your paces. Entry limited to 16 people so sign up quick to avoid missing out.

Club Night - Club Night is now open for registration also. We will be trialling the new group format so after the week we just had in the closed and seeing how competitive matches were playing with mixed grades we hope to see some of the higher grades registering interest.

The Closed Championship - A massive congratulations to all the winners and runner ups on the day. Some outstanding tennis and very close matches.

I would like to thank Maria and Joana for running Tournament Office and everyone who contributed their time volunteering in Tournament office. Thanks to Gina and Joana also for running the kitchen and making sure it was stocked so well all week and Liz for making sure the facilities were well looked after. Thanks to Mick for organising the BBQ squad of Steve, Brian, Jim and Julio and for feeding most of the tennis club over Fridays and Saturday. Also, of course Cristiano and Jarbas for the cocktails on Friday night. Finally, thanks to all the members who supplied baking over the week and contributed their time.

Clothes Sale - The green team’s clothes sale was a great success and raised in the region of €400 euro, there are still clothing items available so we will be running and honest box during club night for anyone who couldn’t make it Friday night. A massive thank you to all the members that contributed items and the green committee members who organised the whole event.

Captains Update - 8th September 2024

Club Night - Club Night is open for registration on E Booking. Great turn out last Thursday and some very competitive games on the night. There will be a revised format to Club night after the Closed where club night will be split into 2 groups on the night A and B. Each group will be divided on grade basis. After 3 rounds completed top 2 men Group A men will partner up with the top 2 men from Group B men and play a final, same format for the top 2 ladies from each group also. This could also change to a mixed format on the night aswell.

The aim is to make games on the night better balanced and have that competitive edge to it also while still maintaining the fun and friendly atmosphere that brings all players together on club night.

Hitting Practice - Hitting Practice will return on Saturday the 28th of September. This year we will have 2 coaches on hand for the 9 O’clock slot for Grade 6 members. 4 courts will be allocated and sign up via booking.  For the 10 O’clock slot grade 5 to 2 we will also open this slot up to 4 courts to cater for the demand and have 2 coaches on hand.  In order to cover the additional coach that will help Mark, hitting practice will now be €5 per person. A small increase but the extra attention members will get will be invaluable

Winter League - Entry has now closed, and a lot of members have registered interest. Please be patient as we go through the names and make team decisions. We would hope to have teams announced after next Monday the 16th September.

If any members would like to participate in the selection process, please email captain@carrigalinetennisclub.com .

Any member registering interest to join the selection team will not be involved in selection for a grade if they have submitted their name for consideration in that grade.  We would love to get more members involvement in the selection process. Anyone submitting their name will be done confidentially and only made aware of there participation if they consent

Captains Update - 25th August 2024

We will get a separate pickle ball event on another night.

For any members that can’t participate in the tennis on the night the boules will be available. For members playing in the social event this is a great time killer if you’re waiting to go back on court also.

The Closed! - The draw for the Closed will take place on Wednesday evening so entry will close Tuesday night. No late entries will be accepted when draw is completed. There are still a couple of members that must complete their entry by making payment so please do this by Tuesday night.

Winter league - Time of year again already. Phase 1 will commence in October, so we are now looking for members to register their interest. Phase 1 will consist of men’s and ladies teams only across all grades. Please email captain@carrigalinetennisclub.com with your name and grade please.

Munster tennis in a meeting with Clubs last week have suggested trying to condense the winter league format into a shorter time frame. This would potentially mean group stages of max 4 teams with elimination rounds after group stages. There is a strong possibility that matches could be on a weekly basis, So please make sure if you are registering your interest that this will require a big commitment from you if selected for a team.

Captains Update - 11th August 2024

Boules - The boules club is up and running on Wednesday mornings .If any members have any interest in attending please email Maria at membership@carrigalinetennisclub.com

While we wait for the App to get up and running we will be using the old system with the light tokens. Captains Update - 7th July 2024

Finally the dust has settled after the Open. We had an absolutely great week, and the weather was very kind to us.

I’d like to thank Stephen McCarthy of Astra homes for his continued sponsorship. This sponsorship plays a vital role in making the event viable to run.

I hate mentioning names as there is always someone whom I will miss but I must give a special mention to Maria O Reilly for running the tournament office and Joana Silvia for running the kitchen. Two jobs that require a lot of effort especially the latter. A massive thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, from tournament office to the many Members that covered the many Kitchen slots.   The open work starts weeks in advance starting with Club clean ups and stocking of club house and without the members involvement in this vital work we wouldn’t have the club in the condition it currently is.

I hope everyone who was involved into open enjoyed the experience and it was great to see so many new members step up to the plate when called on especially in relation to Mick Murray’s BBQ gang. Providing some light entertainment while feeding us and adding to the great atmosphere.

Wimbledon Social - We will be running our annual Wimbledon social this Coming Thursday.  Entry €5.  Time 8 O’ clock sharp. Promises to be great night and entry will be limited. Book your slot by going to court 1 at 8 on Thursday and click to secure your place

ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!

Summer Cup - We had our first team compete in summer cup today. Gina’s Ladies G6 travelled to Rushbrooke today and unfortunately lost 7 - 5 in super doubles, a valiant display by our ladies and some brilliant tennis by both teams

Lower Aghada.

We had a lot of members compete over the last week in lower Aghada but a special mention to Adam Flynn who made it the finals in the XD3. Well done, Adam.

Hitting Practice  - Hitting Practice will finish for the month of July and will commence again in August.

Captains Updates - 9th June 2024

Club night and Hitting practice are now open for registration.

Open Tournaments  - We have had some great success in opens over the last couple of weeks with a lot of members reaching finals and winning. Great to see so many members doing well. Over the last couple of tournaments, we have seen the following members upgraded due to success in the opens post Lakewood, Sundays well and Garryduff - Ger O’Connor, Lyndsey Keohane, Julio Silva, Santiago Alvarez, Sean Cotter, Deirdre Stuart and Christiano Santos. A great achievement and well done to all members who competed over the last number of weeks putting some great performances.

Club Clean-up  - A massive thank you to all members who contributed their time on Saturday to get the club house and grounds looking fantastic. I hope our commander and chief on the day Ger O Connor didn’t work you all too hard. Ger has been doing a massive amount of work behind the scenes recently. Ger has spearheaded the court regeneration works and many other little projects that we will get the benefit from shortly so thanks Ger.

Hitting Wall/Court 6 - As you all have seen recently the hitting wall and pickle ball court is fully open along with the boules area. We will be soon adding the hitting wall/Court 6 to the E booking system and this will allow members to book this area. The Boules area will also be added. In the coming weeks we will be organising a demonstration where members will learn the rules of pickle ball and be shown how to play correctly. A few of us have been winging it lately and probably have creating a new sport unbeknownst to ourselves.

We hope to have an unofficial opening of the hitting wall/court 6 area shortly. More details to follow soon

Off peak Court Time - Just a reminder we have now allocated the 9pm sessions, Monday to Thursday, as off peak. This change to the eBookingOnline system will happen over the next week or so and members will be able to book these slots in addition to their allocated 3 hrs peak time slots. All off peak rules will now apply to these 9 o’clock slots so please can members make themselves familiar with them – CLICK HERE.

Summer Cup 2024

The annual Munster Tennis Summer Cup Competitions are getting underway - Entry for Munster Tennis Summer Cup Competitions is now open. Closing Date for Entry is Friday 7th June 2024. Events are open to all grades. In each grade we can put forward Ladies, Men’s or Mixed teams so please note your preference when submitting your entry.

Munster tennis have a new category this year for any members that haven’t competed in a grade 6 open event. This event is open to all beginner players who are over 18 years on December 31st in the year immediately preceding the year in which the competitions covered by these rules commences provided they are beginners and are not graded at Grade 6/ITN 9 or above. As a result, players for this section only do not have to be included in the current Munster Branch Players' Directory (MBPD).

A beginner is considered someone who is relatively new to the game and has not played at a high level in another sport. It also is someone who has not played in this competition previously at a higher grade. We would encourage all Novice/Beginners Players to get involved in the 3 new events the Mixed/Men’s/Ladies Novice/Beginners Doubles.

Please submit your interest for any of the above events to captain@carrigalinetennisclub.com

It’s been hard to get games in with the unprecedented weather we are getting. Hopefully over the next few weeks we will see an improvement and we can all get a bit more tennis in.
Junior Open
The junior open finished up this weekend and unfortunately ken suffered the same fate and had to cancel a couple of days. Thanks to all the members that helped during this event under hard circumstances, always a bad idea to name people in case any are forgotten but there was a couple of members that stood up when required and these were thanked at the prize giving so thanks again for all your help. I will mention, Aishling and Karen who ran a great event and to their commander in chief ken. As volunteers the time giving over to events like these are all consuming especially when the weather goes against you and Carrigaline Tennis Club would like to thank ken for an amazing job.
Club night /Hitting Practice
Club night and hitting practice are now both open for registration so book quickly to avoid missing out.
Club House
I would like to remind members that the club house is available for use by all members, but I would also like to remind members that under no circumstance should members have to clean up after other members.
There have been incidents recently where the kitchen and games table have been used and items not put away. If you make a cup of tea please wash your cups, dry, and put way. This goes for kitchen items used for any reason. If food has been consumed, please clean worktops make sure floor is cleaned afterwards also.
If you use the games table, please put items back in the shelfs located under tv.
Simple things really so I’d ask members to please be respectful to the club and other members and tidy as you go…..

Captains Update - 24th March 2024

Spring Open
We eventually finished the open last Tuesday night.
Too many people to thank individually. To all the members that contributed to the running of the open, thank you all very much. Its not an easy task to run an open but it couldn’t be run if we don’t have the backing from our members and your support in volunteering your time. It was a long 2 weeks and when help was required and the SOS email sent out it was answered on every occasion. You can all have a well-deserved break now until the summer open where once again the fun starts all over again….
Congratulation to all our members that played in the open and all our finalists but a special mention to our XD5 winners Ger O’Connor and Lyndsey Keohane on winning their respective final.

Off peak courts are now open to members to avail of.

Captains Update - 3rd March 2024

Spring Open Kitchen Duty - Thanks to all the kitchen committee for all the hard work they have done to date, and we are now on countdown to our spring open.
As usual every year the success of the open falls on a lot of members. A lot of work goes into the running of this event and the tournament committee, kitchen committee, green committee for example undertake a lot of work behind the scenes but without the help of the club members that help in the running of the kitchen and supplying salads and delicious baked goods it wouldn’t make the event as good as it is.
We appreciate very much all the help and time members provide volunteering in the kitchen and this year we have followed on from last year to make it a bit easier for everyone.
Menu has been simplified to just toasted sandwiches during the weekdays with some hot meals only after 4pm on the weekends
As per every year you can register HERE for times slots you can volunteer for and what days you can provide baked goods, cakes, and salads.
Alternatively, if like me a bit not inclined to use the app you can Txt Gina Molloy and let her know what availability you have, and she will in turn allocate you a slot.
The first 2 days of the tournament have been published so any members competing can see if you are scheduled to volunteer.
An email will go out on Tuesday so members volunteering can make themselves familiar with kitchen duties and procedures
Everyone’s help is very much appreciated so thanks in advance.

Captains Update - 25th February 2024

Hitting practice is open for registration on Saturday morning. This a great practice session run by the club for its members. The 9 O’clock session is considerable busy but the over the last couple of weeks the 10 O’clock session hasn’t been hitting full capacity.
These sessions have to be running at full capacity to keep them viable to run so we will be reviewing these hitting sessions at the end of march so if this is something members would like to see after march try make the effort to attend when you can for the month of march.
Corner House Cup
Some great Matches again last Thursday.
We will be hosting the final this Thursday

Once this email is sent these hitting sessions are open for registration.
Carrigaline Spring Open
The kitchen committee will be looking for a lot of volunteers over the tournament and obviously a supply of the delicious salads and baked goods we get every year and help make this event profitable. A link will be sent out next Sunday that will allow members to book slots between the 6 and 16th of march.
This event needs the support of all members to run successfully and wouldn’t be able to do so without the many members that volunteer their time every year so please if you can give your time please do.
Club Clean-up
An email went out looking for help for our club clean up yesterday and a big thanks to all who contacted to say they could help. We had a great turnout, and a massive amount of work was done to get the club ship shape for the spring open. I’d like to thank the Commander and Chief on the day Ger O’Connor for all his hard work and allocating everyone jobs.
Ger has asked me to make members aware that footpaths and the veranda will be power washed on Thursday the 29th and parking around the club house ill be cordoned off during the day
Table Quiz
Thanks to everyone that supported the table quiz last night. A special thanks to John McDermott that frustrated many a person last night. John puts a lot of work in over many weeks compiling the questions on the night and the event wouldn’t happen without him, Thanks to our other members that helped on the night also Alan K, Joanna, Myriam, Antoinette, Sharon, and Louise who puts together our raffle prizes on the night and not to forget our MC on the night Diarmuid O’Mathuna who once again gave a flawless performance calling the questions on the night.
Nearly €1000 euro raised on the night for our Enjoy tennis programme which is brilliant and will help cover coaching fees.
I would just like to add the winners on the night very generously returned the prize money they won on the night in order to further support the Enjoy Tennis programme.

Friday Night Clinics & Saturday Matchplay

We will be commencing with Doubles coaching on Friday evenings for the month of February.
Just in time before the opens start in March.
4-week clinic €50 per person

The aim of this clinic and will be to primarily focus on the tactical side of doubles tennis.
The idea would be to complete this clinic with a partner you intend to compete with at the opens.
Please make sure if you intend to participate in the clinic that you are available on the following dates 2nd,9th,16th and 23rd

The following are some examples things this clinic will focus on -
• Positioning: Your court position can create pressure. For example, the returner’s partner should position themselves near the centre service line to protect against middle volleys.
• Opportunity and Danger Assessment: The net player should balance watching the baseliner for attacking chances and the opposing net player for defensive positioning.
• Entice with the Line: Tempt opponents with the down-the-line shot. It’s a high-risk option for them, and you can capitalize on their errors.
• Avoid Ball-Following: Focus on the opponents rather than the ball. This approach saves time and allows for quicker reactions at the net.
• Server’s Partner’s Role: The server’s partner should aim to attack the return, considering poaching or intercepting, especially on a centre or T serve.
• Communication: Use hand signals to plan each point, deciding on serve direction, spin, and the net player’s movement.
Cian Blake will undertake the grades 2,3 and 4 session for this four-week term.
Karen Holmes and Alan Kelly will undertake the graded 5 and 6’s for the 4-week term also.

4 pairings only per time slot.
Men’s doubles 6pm to 7pm Grade 2,3 and Grade 4
Mixed doubles 7pm to 8pm Grade 2,3 and Grade 4
Ladies’ doubles 8pm to 9pm Grade 2,3 and Grade 4

6 pairings only per time slot
Ladies doubles G5/G6 6pm to 7pm
Mixed doubles G5/G6 7pm to 8pm
Mens doubles G5/G6 8pm to 9pm

Men’s and Ladies doubles will swap time slots each week so if men doubles is at 6pmon the 2nd, it will change to 8pm on the 9th.

To accompany the doubles clinic Mark Cunningham will run a match play style format on Saturday mornings as part of the Hitting practice for the month of February to let people practice if they are attending the clinics.
Alternatively, if you can’t get a place on the Friday night clinic this is a great opportunity to get some coaching from Mark on doubles format.
Saturday morning coaching will open per usual on a Sunday night.
Grade 6 at 9am
Grade 5- 2 at 10am
Limited to 12 people
Cost €5

The Friday night clinics will be first come first served basis so if you are interested in attending it must be as a pairing and both people committed to the 4 weeks.
Please email me at captain@carrigalinetennisclub.com if you are interested in attending the clinics.
If Friday or Saturday doesn’t suit you we are looking at a 5 O’clock option on Wednesdays , please email me if Wednesday would be an option for anyone also.

Winter League - Not Good news today
Gers MD5 team lost 3 – 1 at home to Tralee.
Eimhin’s WD5 lost 3 – 1 away to St Michael's in the last 16.
Aoife’s WD4 also lost on the road to Sundays well 4 – 0 also in the 16.
Bridget’s WD1 team had the very hard task of playing 2 matches in two days. Sundays well on Saturday and limerick lawn today both away. Unfortunately, the matches didn’t go there way and now finish their campaign. This was the first year we had a G1 team in winter league and this wouldn’t have been possible with our friends from Lakewood supporting us.
Well done to Bridget, Denise, Summer, Shannon, Chloe and Ashling on a great tournament
Well done to all teams that played.
Winter league Phase 2  - Thanks to all Members that put their names forward for winter league Phase 2.
Unfortunately, we won’t be entering teams in the next phase.
Munster tennis in the recent days updated their Munster Directory rules 2023/2024
directory_rules_2024.pdf (munstertennis.ie)
There have been quite considerable changes to the points allocations for winter league.
These changes were made after CTC had entered teams. We or other Clubs were not contacted to inform them of these considerable changes and no engagement was had with clubs during the process in deciding to enforce these changes.
As a committee we have decided not to support Munster tennis winter league in entering teams due to the handling of these changes.
I have been in talks with other clubs regarding invites to play Carrigaline teams after Xmas to enable our members to have some competitive tennis before the open season commences so more details on this to follow soon.
Turkey Tournaments
Our second Turkey Tournament commences this Thursday.

€5 entry and now limited to 20 people.
Winner on the night will receive a voucher for a SuperValu Turkey.
Court Cancellation - A Gentle reminder about cancelling courts. If people are not using the courts, please cancel them in a timely manner so other members can avail of them and even if a cancellation is at the last minute due to any circumstances, please still remove you name from the booking please.
Smoke - With the Winter well upon us there has been complaints about smoke covering the courts. Last Friday was particularly bad. We will be monitoring this, and I would ask if any members to contact me if you experience any more smoke on courts over the next couple of weeks.

Court Bookings - It was mentioned at the AGM about Members exceeding their 3hr court time during peak bookings.
I know there is sometimes where a sub is required at short notice and can be hard to find one.
If this is the case and the person playing has used their 3 hrs, please just send me a short text to update me please so im aware of it if anybody contacts me. There have been cases where members are knowingly playing over there allocated 3 hrs doing this so I’d ask members to obey by the rules.
As mentioned, we do monitor court booking and sometimes, we miss things, but this operates also on an honesty policy and self-regulation by members. The club rules are on the club website, and I ask all members to refresh themselves with them. Every time I get a phone call I'm put in a difficult position when asked if something is allowed when the rules say its not and when I must contact someone about booking courts incorrectly so, please be aware this.

Captains Update - 5th July 2023

The Astra Carrigaline Open Doubles Tournament finished on Sunday 1st July after a great week and a half, I’d like to thank everyone for their contribution in helping to make the event as successful as possible.
Some say it takes a community to raise a child and the same can be said when it comes to running a tournament. The work undertaken by the tournament office/kitchen committee starts well before the event but all this work behind the scenes wouldn’t mean anything if we didn’t have the great club members that we have.
Too many names to mention but thanks to all club members who did the hard work covering kitchen slots, organising the cleaning, running the gin tent and BBQ on semi-finals nights and to everyone who did tournament office duty, a special mention to Noel Ronayne and Louise Cogan for all the help they provided me with before and during the tournament
Final thanks would be for our sponsor and valued club member Stephen McCarthy of Astra Construction.
Sponsorship is hard to come by and Stephen has been sponsoring this tournament well before I was a member and his contribution each year is very much appreciated. This sponsorship goes a long way to funding prizes and covering additional costs the club incurs which is critical to making the event profitable for the club .
Thanks to all of you again.
Wimbledon
We will be holding our annual Wimbledon Social night next Thursday the 13th July.
All whites on the night. Always a great night and we’d encourage as many new members as possible to come up and enjoy their first Social Event.

Club Clean Up
Thanks to all the at volunteered to date, we still could do with a couple of more people.
Even if it’s only half an hour you can give at any stage between 9 and 11 it would be very much welcomed.
As mentioned before every member gain when we do something like this, it improves the overall look of the club and keeps the facilities we have at the highest standards possible.
If you could please email Donal at captain@carrigalinetennisclub.com to confirm you can attend that would be great.
Kitchen – Astra Summer Open
Thanks to all the kitchen committee for all the hard work they have done to date, and we are till 5 days away from starting the event.
As usual every year the success of the open falls on a lot of members. A lot of work goes into the running of this event and the tournament committee, kitchen committee, green committee for example undertake a lot of work behind the scenes but with out the help of the club members that help in the running of the kitchen it wouldn’t make the event as good as it is.
We appreciate very much all the help and time members provide volunteering in the kitchen and this year we have tried to make it a bit easier for everyone.
Menu has been simplified to just toasted sandwiches during the weekdays, First weekend we have a catering truck on site so only cakes, sweets, soft drinks, and alcohol will be on sale in the kitchen.
Semi final nights we have a BBQ on both nights also so no food being served in the kitchen either of these nights also.

As per every year you can register on the SignUp App and pick suitable times slots that you can volunteer for and what days you can provide baked goods, cakes, and salads.
Register & Sign Up Here
Alternatively, if you are not inclined to use the app you can Text Gina Molloy  and let her know what availability you have, and she will in turn allocate you a slot.
Everyone’s help is very much appreciated so thanks in advance.

We have over the last couple of weeks started to try tidy the clubhouse and remove items that aren’t necessary to have in the club house. We would appreciate it if all members could try to keep it tidy especially on the run up to the Spring open. Currently there is a collection of bottles and tennis items in the Disabled toilet. If anybody is missing anything, please check this area over the next couple of days as we will be disposing of these items at the weekend.
Thanks to the members involved in lending their help tiding the clubhouse

Advertisement - Gardner/Groundsperson

The club currently requires a part time Gardener/Groundsperson.
In the past, we have depended on members volunteering to do a few group clean-ups during the year. In 2022 we hired a gardener but he is not available to continue in 2023. We had a CES scheme worker over the last few years but he finished up last month.
Since our CES worker finished up, one of our members is sweeping the courts once a week to ensure that they are available to use for all members. This takes 2/3 hours a week and this is not sustainable.
If any member(s) are interested in taking on some or all of this work or can recommend a gardener that you use can you please contact Ger O’Sullivan or Noel Ronayne.
Please note that this is a paid position but if we cannot fill the vacancy then we will be dependent on volunteers to keep the club grounds and courts in order.
Duties include -
Cutting Grass and hedges,
strimming / weeding,
feeding plants
power washing fence / gates etc (not every year)
putting out bins every Monday night
Moss removal (spraying and brushing)
Court maintenance
Brushing ( with brushing machine)

9pm Peak booking
Just a reminder that any 9pm court marked as “Court Free” is open for booking regardless of whether you have reached the 3-hour peak limit or not. Any upcoming 9pm court free on a Sunday night at 8pm will be marked as “Court free” and can be booked from that time on. The aim is to try to promote the use of the 9pm courts. Its getting busy so please try to cancel courts well in advance so others may avail.

Round Robins
The January Round Robins are coming to a finish. In the mixed the experienced pairing of Noonan & Noonan were narrowly defeated by the up-and-coming Flynn & Cunningham. A late attempt by Tom to have their young opponents deported failed in the high court. Ryan & Ryan seem to have one hand on the Pinot Grigio trophy (despite it being a dry January). O’Donovan & Webb have held on to their top spot in the Ladies with relative ease whilst in the Men’s doubles/Mixed singles no play yet in the top boxes. Finishing date is 31st January.

Captains Update - 12th January 2022

Round Robins
January Round Robins are up and running. We are still short on the Men’s doubles league. The club has some very talented Male Members and it would be great to see some success in the Winter League/Summer cup Men’s Teams. The Round Robin would be a great way to establish strong partnerships. Please contact John Gargan if you are interested in joining any of our ladders.

Court Bookings
Demand for Courts has picked up significantly. Just a reminder it is a Club Rule to have all the correct names on the Booking. We also would again request that Courts be cancelled in good time in order to allow others to avail of that Court and to ensure those playing under lights know if there is someone playing alongside their Court.

Captains Update - 14th December 2021

Winter League Phase 1 - Our remaining team bowed out of the competition on Sunday down in blustery Kinsale. Hard luck to Kasha, Susan, Andrew and Rafa who put up a great fight but went down 2-3. Phase 2 kicks off in February and nice to see teams getting some early practice in.
Christmas Gift - The club is selling water bottles with the club logo on them through Easy-Payments. These are a limited edition (only 17 - until we buy more). A nice stocking filler for your favourite mixed or doubles partner perhaps (or favourite committee member perhaps). Just click on “Club Gear and tennis balls” dropdown on EP to see a picture and to order if interested. Anyone who purchases one can pick it up Thursday night or Saturday morning.
Hitting practice - We are doing one more hitting practice this Saturday at 10am with Mark. A few spots left. Just click on ebooking. Mark has promised to make the rules even more complicated for the season ending session.

Great way to knock off those couple of pounds gained.

Captains Update - 10th December 2021

Autumn Doubles
Our autumn doubles league concluded last night in misty rain. Jack’s Pandemics triumphed in the end over Donal’s Spin Masters in the final. Jack attributed their success to something he brought back from his travels. Donal didn’t mention once his team’s failure being down to his team not getting any semi final practice (he mentioned it 10 times actually!). Many thanks to all the supporters and to Alison for her famous sausage rolls. Roll on the Corner house cup in February.
Round Robin
Results are in as to who topped the ladders (most times at no 1). Familiar faces.
WD: Maria and Lisa (again)
MD: Jack and Alan
XD: Lisa and John (again)
Singles: Bridget and Donal
Bottles of wine on the way to each. Thanks to JohnG as always for all his hard work throughout the year in organizing. Decembers fixtures are now up. Don’t leave it to late over the holiday period to play.
Club Christmas night
We will have one last 2021 club night on Thursday 16th at 8pm. Festive attire is a suggestion and plenty of Xmas spirit on the night. Your MC will be Donal. This will be a doubles format. Booking is now open on Ebooking. A couple of spots left for hitting tomorrow at 10am btw.
Old Tennis Balls
A reminder that the Club is taking in old tennis balls from members and donating to a dog rescue home. The bucket is outside the main clubhouse door.
Finally, if anyone lost an earring on court lately it’s hanging up in the club house.

Captains Update - 16th November 2021

A really great days tennis played out last Sunday in great weather. Our Grade 3’s topped their group with a 5-0 win and are now into the knockout stages. Our Grade 2’s narrowly lost to Crosshaven and need a big win next Sunday to go through. And our Grade 4’s picked up their first win against St Anne’s despite a few sore heads. Autumn Doubles
We are trying out a new event on our Competitions Calendar. The Autumn Doubles will kick off on Thursday November 19th and run for three weeks. We will have four teams of ten players with each team playing each other once (Men’s and Ladies doubles) with the top two teams playing off on the final night.

Start time will be either 8pm or 9pm and will alternate each week so you’ll play at 8pm one week and 9pm the following week.
Numbers are limited to forty and the cost is 10 Euro (payable on first night). Closing date is Friday 12th November but it may fill up sooner than that. So, if you fancy a bit of competitive tennis send in your name to captain@carrigalinetennisclub.com
For those nights that the Autumn Doubles runs, hitting practice will move to Saturday at 10am and run for 1 hour. So don’t delay. Get your name in soon.

Captains Update - 30th October 2021

Clean up
With Winter approaching the club would like to get the grounds and the Club House in good condition. There are two clean ups set to happen. The first is next Wednesday 3rd November at 1pm and the second is on Saturday 6th at 10am. If you can spare an hour, please come along and help out. We really need people to volunteer for these types of events. Courts will be closed on Saturday 6th November from 10am to 11am.

Court 5
As people might have noticed Court 5 tends to get a fair share of leaves from the surrounding trees this time of the year. This means the Court does need to be cleaned on a regular basis between now and December. If you can help out in using a leaf blower and are willing to go on a rota, please email your name to Ger below. If enough people volunteer it might only be once every 2/3 weeks and its only for next few weeks.  email Ger on gerosullivan7@gmail.com

9pm Courts
Our 9pm courts from Monday to Wednesday tend to be the less popular at the moment. For a trial period in November any 9pm slot (Mon-Wed) not booked by the previous Sunday (8pm) will be marked as “Court Free”. This means anyone can book these courts regardless of the 3-hour peak period rule. The aim is to try to encourage use of these court times and allow people who may want to play Round Robins, Winter League practice or even those who wish to stay on after playing at 8pm to utilize. Each person in your group will need to put their name on the booking they require (a bit like club night).

Captains Update - 26th October 2021

Halloween
Our Halloween Social event will kick off at 7pm this Friday. Are you brave enough? We would encourage people to dress accordingly (a mask will do if stuck). Best dressed on the night wins a prize. Entry is 10 Euro and will cover Pizzas. Please enter via e-booking. Thanks to Louise for doing a great job decorating the place.
Club Night
Only two spaces left for club night this Thursday and with tomorrow a possible washout get your name in early if interested. Cost is 3 Euro. We have several people stepping down from club night (Anne, Liz, Garrett). The club is extremely grateful for the time they have all put in. If you have any interest in becoming part of the Club night rota team, please email Captain@CarrigalineTennisClub.com
We need some volunteers, and you only need to cover once every 6-8 weeks.

Winter League
Congrats to our Grade 2 Mixed team who travelled to Dromahane yesterday and came away with a 4-1 win. Next weekend all teams are in action. Grade 4’s play in Lakewood on Saturday at 2.30pm. Sunday sees the Grade 3’s play at home to Douglas at 10am and the Grade 2’s travel to Rushbrooke for a 2pm start. All support welcome.

Forehand Coaching Clinic
Head Coach Cian’s next coaching clinic takes place on Friday November 12th from 6 to 7.30pm. The focus for this session will be forehands. Spaces limited to 8 people and cost is 20 Euro. If you are interested, then please email Captain@CarrigalineTennisClub.com

Tokens
As we are a little short on Light Tokens at the moment, we would like to ask members to only purchase 4 tokens each (max) from Kilmoney Stores. You can also purchase tokens from Antoinette or Sheila.

Captains Update - 12th October 2021

Hitting Practice
A few spaces left for this Thursdays club night with Mark. Please remember to cancel if you can't make it.

Tommy Jackson
Our Carrigaline team pulled out all the stops over the weekend to bring home the Tommy Jackson. Noel becomes the first male captain to achieve this feat so well done to him and to all the team. We did discover that the Cup given to us (by accident?) was in fact a Ladies doubles internal Cup. Ironic, given the heroic job the men did to bring it home on the day.

Munster Senior Winter League Phase 2
We have decided to request names for Winter League phase 2 which starts in January. The reason for this is to allow good time to pick the teams and allow for teams to practice. Phase 2 is Men’s and Ladies teams. If you wish to enter, please email below before the 23rd October. If you wish to specify a partner you may do so but we can’t guarantee you will end up on the same team.
selectioncommittee@carrigalinetennisclub.com

Catherine Mulhare Memorial Tournament
Our annual Catherine Mulhare event which takes place this Friday is now full. If you wish to go on the waiting list (there are always one or two late withdrawals) please email into the captains address. If people would like to bring snacks etc that would be brilliant. Tea/Coffee/Beers/Wine available on the night.

Finally, please note that the Player’s Directory has now been re-published and all points reset to zero. The players’ directory can be found at:
https://www.munstertennis.ie/directory.html

Summer Cup/Lower Aghada
Unfortunately, our 2 remaining teams bowed out of the competition yesterday. Great support on the day from club members and well done to all our captains for the effort they put in.

In our recent Club Survey we asked members if they wished to change the booking time of Courts from 8pm to 10pm. A slim majority voted in favour of moving so on our return to play the courts will open for booking at 10.05pm. This will be for a trial period and will be reviewed at the AGM in November.
We hope to present the overall findings of the entire survey in the coming weeks.

Lights
Finally, we just want to make our Members aware that the Committee is looking at the possibility of having the lights for our courts automated. So, you basically would pay for your lights when booking your court and there would be no need for tokens. We hope to possibly have this in place before the summer pending the findings of our review.

Have a great St Patrick's Day. Please God we might be back in April.

Club Survey
Hopefully, you have all received an email regarding the club survey. If you didn’t and wish to participate then please contact Eddie at Chairperson@CarrigalineTennisClub.com
Your feedback is important.

Know the Rules.
A player posted this question in a recent Tennis Article:
My tennis partner hit me with a 100km/hr second serve and I took 5 mins to recover. Our opponents offered us a first serve on resumption. What is the ruling on this?
Answer: You are only allowed a 3-minute timeout in a match under Rule 29. By default, your partner should serve their second serve and not the first. He/she may need serving lessons too.

Volunteers Needed for Kitchen

Amidst all the disappointments and cancellations of recent months, we are very grateful that our annual Closed Tournament is going ahead, starting this Wednesday. Unfortunately, according to the latest health guidelines, there will be no spectators allowed. However, players will be allowed to have a complimentary cup of tea or coffee after their match, and the marquee will be set up in the car park for this purpose. To facilitate this, we are asking for volunteers to do a 2 hour shift in the kitchen to make the tea/coffee, wash up the cups, and to regularly sanitize frequently used touch points. There will be very little to do during the 2 hour shift, so you may have to watch some tennis to pass the time. Only one person per shift is needed. Monday-Friday shifts will begin at 6pm, Saturday at 10am, and Sunday at 6pm due to Summer Cup matches that day. If you would like to volunteer to do a kitchen shift, please contact Aoife. Thanks in advance.

Covid-19 Update #2- 14th May 2020 - Coaching & Lights

Coaching

For any Member interested in coaching, please note the following:

1.    Coaching can only be for one person, unless the other people are from the same household.

2.    The coaching is for all members. You will need to contact the coach in advance to see what options are available.

3.    Court 5 has been assigned by the COVID Committee as a dedicated coaching only court from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and 9am to 1pm on Saturday. This is to contain the coaching to one specific court within the club and help reduce risk to other members. Coaching on any other court is not permitted on any day of the week.

4.    In this first phase of reopening, the coaching will be run by Cian Monday to Friday and by Mark Cunningham on Saturday mornings. It is hoped to bring other coaches back in on subsequent phases of the re-opening as the 5KM limit is expanded wider.

5.    The coaches have satisfied the committee that they have familiarised themselves with the current guidelines from Tennis Ireland in relation to returning to play. Before making any arrangements with the coaches, they will brief you on what is now required from you to ensure the session can go ahead safely for both you and the coach.

For anyone interested in coaching or simply looking for more information, please contact Cian Blake or Mark Cunningham

1.    If playing singles, then enter both names on the booking sheet and then add a guest called “lights”. This will incur a charge of 5 Euro and the total cost will be split between both players via PayPal.

2.    If playing doubles then enter all 4 names on the booking and one player must pay for lights using EasyPayments. There is now a tab for lights on this system.

Lights will be turned on by a member of the committee from 9pm to 10pm only Monday - Thursday. No lights will be available outside of these designated days. This is just a short-term solution.

Message from Your Covid Committee

Dear Members,

As you will have seen there are a considerable number of Tennis Ireland obligations that we need to collectively observe in order to ensure that we can reopen on 18th May.

  • Key obligations are based around:
  • Social distancing
  • Good hand hygiene
  • Contact tracing capabilities

This is the first of our amended policies geared towards meeting those obligations and relates to the booking of courts.

  • As its members only for this first phase no Guest name will be allowed on booking system.
  • Players must have a per-reserved playing time. It’s no longer permitted to come down on spec even if the courts are free.
  • Play is limited to singles only. The only exception for doubles is if playing partners are from the same household.
  • Off Peak bookings will be set initially to prevent consecutive books (i.e. staying on for a second hour) in line with peak booking rules.
  • All those playing (Adult and Junior) must be named on the booking (this is very important to allow contact tracing should the need arise). So, for singles the system won't accept a booking without 2 names. For doubles we ask that all four names are entered. If a sub is required after the booking is made the booking should be altered to reflect that.
  • Please note the change above requires all those playing to have credit in their account for peak booking times, or the system will not accept the booking. We don't want members scrambling at 8pm to contact their partner(s) to add credit.
  • Coaching will be restricted to Court 5. Coaching on any other court is not permitted in this initial phase
  • Court 5 will be pre-booked for coaching Mon-Fri 9-5pm and Sat 9am-1pm.
  • Further details on coaching will be sent in a separate email

For any Queries regarding specifically to the new booking regulations please contact club captain at captain@carrigalinetennisclub.com

Captains Update - 10th May 2020

Court Reopening – 8 more sleeps….

All set for the opening on the 18th. Please note that play will be restricted to singles play only in this phase of reopening. The only exception for doubles is if playing partners are from the same household. Normal Doubles play will hopefully be starting up in the next phase. One to one coaching will also start up in Carrigaline on the 18th.

In order to encourage households to play each other we are going to try and gather a list of those looking to play other households. If you email in your Name and partner/Son/Daughter/Brother to Captain@CarrigalineTennisClub.com we will distribute all the parings out to those wishing to take part.

Video on passing Tennis balls.

Under the new regulations avoiding handling tennis balls is a key part of playing tennis in this first phase. Below link is a short video on the different ways of passing tennis balls without handling. The “Pele” flick is to be avoided unless you are under 10.

Club grounds

A lot of work behind the scenes are taking place in order to ensure the grounds/clubhouse are ready and meet the recommendations of Tennis Ireland and the HSE. Even though the club house will be initially closed a deep clean is underway by Fiona and Eimear Geary. The club grounds have been cleaned up (courts swept/grass cut/weeding done) & new safety measures are being put in place such as sanitizing stations etc (all work led by Ger o’S and Noel). Our thanks to all volunteers involved.

Zoom Cardio

Cian has kindly agreed to do one more Cardio session next Saturday at 11am. It would be nice to have a good turnout prior to the resumption of tennis and it’s a good way of getting fit for the restart. Names to Captain@CarriglaineTennisClub.com before Friday 6pm.

Restringing

Tim Marnane is available for racket stringing. Just reach out to him on 086 340 0378 and he'll be glad to help.

Bingo/Table Quiz

Our Saturday Night Live show continued last night. Great turnout and great fun. Our thanks to AutoRight for sponsoring the prizes and to Donal for a great MC job. Look out later for details of next weeks event.

Finally and most importantly,

The Covid-19 committee will meet tomorrow night to finalize recommendations specific to our club based on the protocols published by Tennis Ireland. These will be emailed to members shortly afterwards as there will be changes to booking procedure etc. We would ask every member to please read and familiarise themselves with the tennis Ireland protocols available on the Tennis Ireland website in advance.
Tennis Ireland Covid-19 Return to Tennis Guidance

Tennis Balls

Just a reminder regarding the purchase of Tennis Balls as we eagerly contemplate getting back to playing tennis again.

Tennis balls can be purchased in Kilmoney Stores. Just pop in.

The second option is to pay online using EasyPayments under the tab “Club Gear”. Once paid you can then send a text to either Fiona Geary (087 9053832) or Sheila Stokes (086 8301266) who will coordinate delivery to you. Cost is 15 Euro for 6 balls.

The guidelines from Tennis Ireland is that Players should use two sets of clearly marked tennis balls (new or old). These should be alternated for serving with each player only touching their individual tennis balls.

More guidelines will be issued by the committee in the coming days on playing and Health and Safety matters.

Brian Hurley from Kilmoney Stores has very generously agreed to sponsor what we need so we are very grateful to him. We may need additional help from those who have offered at some stage.

Club Captain's Update 19th April 2020

Covid-19 update

No major update. Tennis is beginning to start up again in certain countries but as can be read from article below its likely to be under certain new restrictions.

https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/austria-to-allow-golf-and-tennis-to-resume-from-may-1st-1.4229567

No guidance from Tennis Ireland yet but Munster tennis are engaging with clubs. Regarding tournaments TI have said an email will be going out to clubs to keep them up to speed - essentially, they are working on a number of draft new calendars, working with various opening dates, but there will be a large amount of overlapping of tournaments because there just won’t be the time to run as per the previous calendar. We’ll have to wait and see what this means for our own open.

If any Member needs a Helping Hand with anything such as Shopping or Prescription Pickups etc. – Please refer to an earlier email from the Club with contact details of our Volunteers.

Please do reach out. With movement further restricted don't be shy in asking for help. Thanks to everyone for volunteering.

There's been a suggestion to Clubs that all people should be encouraged to keep a Diary of all places they visit (or have visited recently) and a list of the people they have physical contact with on a daily basis. If this is taken on board, it would reduce the workload of those working tirelessly with the job of Contact Tracing in the weeks ahead. This would make a big difference in identifying people who need to be contacted.

St Patrick's Day Event

Events this Week

This year we are trying out a new event. On Monday night the 16th March the settlers on the North side of Carrigaline will take on the South side in a unique team challenge with the Owenabue river being the dividing line.

If you’re not sure which team you can represent, then stick your toe in the river and if it’s cold then you’re a North-sider. More to follow next week but keep the date
