Carrigaline U14 Team runners-up in the MCAL Cup

History Repeating itself at Junior Winter League Finals Day at Carrigaline Tennis Club

It was a case of old meets new at Carrigaline Tennis Club on Sunday, when Carrigaline Club Members Mary Craig and Breeda Harrington came to watch the Junior Winter League Finals, a tournament which they organised over 30 years ago. They were welcomed by this years’ organisers, Maeve Cantillon and Sylvia Fullgraf.

The tournament, which is in its 31st year, began in 1993 and was set up by Carrigaline Tennis Club when sponsorship was agreed with Tedcastles through their local representative Kevin Carroll. A perpetual trophy, namely the ‘Carroll Cup’ was presented to the winners. This cup was subsequently renamed as sponsors changed throughout the years, being at one stage the Casey Cup and then the Wilson Cup.

In 1993, Mary and Breeda set about encouraging junior players in Carrigaline Tennis Club and beyond to play tennis during the Winter season and organised this tournament for many years.

The tournament initially had seven teams entered and Lower Aghada Tennis Club were the winners of the inaugural event.

The event has now grown to include thirteen Cork City and County Clubs with over one hundred children playing in this year’s event competing for the u12 Pet Essentials Cup, u14 MCAL Cup and u16 KBS Cup.

Twenty-six teams consisting of boys and girls competed in very enjoyable tennis matches both in their home clubs and away starting last October. The teams, who came through the round robin format and were successful competed on Sunday for the Cup and Plate titles.

Congratulations to Mallow on winning the U12 Pet Essentials Cup, St Michaels on winning the U14 MCAL Cup and Ballinlough on winning the U16 KBS Cup.

Commiserations to our own U14 team who were runners-up in the MCAL Cup Final.

Plate winners on Sunday were Rushbrooke White who won the Pet Essentials Plate, Ballinlough Blue won the MCAL Plate and Whitechurch won the KBS Plate.

A big thank you to the volunteers who helped out on Finals day and especially to Maeve Cantillon and Sylvia Fullgraf for all the hard work running the competition from last September, when invites were sent out, through to finals day.

And finally, sponsors are crucial to the running of the tournament and Carrigaline Tennis Club are very proud of their continued support to the Club. Local sponsors are Pet Essentials, Murray Cloney Accountancy (MCAL) and Kerry Food Ingredients (KBS). A big thank you to our sponsors Billy O’Mahony from Pet Essentials, Mick Murray from Murray, Clooney and Associates and Ger O’Connor from Kerry Food Ingredients for their support.

Another Successful Junior Tournament hosted by Carrigaline Tennis Club

It’s hard to believe that another year has passed by and we have already completed the 2024 edition of our junior Open. This year we were delighted to host Tour 500 & 100 events In Association with Waterman Kelly Consulting Engineers.

Waterman Kelly are a local civil and structural engineering company who were established here in Cork in the mid 1990’s. The company prides itself on helping to support local communities and especially sporting events that encourage young kids to keep active and healthy.

The Carrigaline Junior Open catered for a wide span of ages ranging from U8 to U18 age groups, including U8, U9 and U10 events. This was a great opportunity for the youngest players to start to compete and build up their skills in a competitive yet fun environment.

As in previous years, we had strong participation from local clubs, but also people travelling from further afield. Sligo, Kildare and Mayo were among some of the other counties so well represented in Carrigaline. The week saw fantastic matches, incredible rallies, dropshots, aces, volleys, smashes ... amazing shots that captivated us for hours. We managed to complete the schedule on time, despite losing almost three days play down to the poor run of weather we have endured.

Our finals day was on Easter Sunday and we saw four winners from Carrigaline Tennis Club win out on the day. Hannah Foley in the Girls Singles U12 100 event, Eric Clarke Waterman in the U12 Boys Doubles with his partner Michael Creedon, Jessie Cunningham with Partner Ava Chandler in Girls U16 doubles and finally Matthew Thompson in the Boys Singles U14 500 event with a hard fought championship tie-break in a really captivating final win over Patrick Power from our neighbours in Rushbrooke.

The club would like to thank all the volunteers who gave up their time during the first week of Easter Holidays to help make this event happen. Coaches Karen Homes and Ashling O’Sullivan, our junior committee, sponsors and all those who did a stint in the Kitchen to make sure our visitors and their parents were fuelled for action. Events like these just cannot happen without the support and help from parents, coaches and volunteers who spent long hours helping out during the tournament.

While not all our juniors won during the week, many played tournament Tennis for the first time, which we hope was a great experience for them and will give them the interest and confidence to enter other tournaments during the year to help put what they learn in coaching classes to the test. We wish all our Juniors the very best for the rest of the term as we look forward to the summer season and hopefully some better weather for all of us to enjoy.

We are incredibly grateful to Laya Healthcare and to Dairygold Co-Op Superstores for continuing their sponsorship of our Junior Open for the second year running. Without support from such companies, it would not be possible to run such a high profile tournament which attracted many of Ireland’s top ranked junior players this year.
